It's a rare delight to come upon a novel by an author you've never heard of, courtesy of a fellow science fiction fan's word of mouth, and realize you've stumbled upon a work of exceptional talent.True, "Terms of Service" isn't an action-packed title, and a first chapter labeled "An Ordinary Day" doesn't suggest a thriller. We meet our protagonist, whose name is Kim, as she wakes up with a hangover. Kim lives alone in a plain apartment in a nondescript high-rise; although her housebot brings her good coffee, her stubborn Food Company refrigerator won't give her anything but tofu and spelt for breakfast. Her clothes come in pale blue, pale yellow, pale green, and pale beige, period. She runs through the rain to catch a bus, getting to work just in time to avoid Transit Company demerits that would make an ordinary day even drearier.But if Kim's world seems not so awfully strange, not all that grim, not exactly scary—maybe even a little boring—before you know it, it's too late.The clues are there before Chapter 1 even starts, in the list of terms of service that appears right after the table of contents. Ten vague statements such as "The customer shall not use The Company's goods, services, or property for unauthorized purposes" fail to mention that the Companies (there are many) are authorizing fewer and fewer purposes every day, as they micromanage the lives of the entire population.More clues appear on the next page's "Notes on the Translation." It seems this novel was originally written in a language called Panglobal, which has no gender-specific pronouns; consequently, everyone in the English translation is a she, her, or we, the latter being the only polite form of self-reference—to call oneself "I" is offensive, and brands one a selfist.Thus forewarned, we follow Kim's mid-level work at the AI Company, which boils down to teaching robots how to catch the clients of various companies—Transit, Food, Clothing, Housing, Elevators—in the act of unauthorized behaviors such as jostling other people on a bus, or worse, refusing to honor the terms of the universal birthing contract by scheming to keep "their" children for themselves.Kim is good at what she does, although away from work her moments of anger betray nascent rebelliousness, especially when her vodka bottle gets low. Then comes a biking trip with her best friend, Shan, the two of them taking the train to a nearby national park that seems like a forested paradise. Both are skilled bikers, but Shan doesn't play by the rules. What they discover after they've gone through an unlocked gate will change both their lives, especially Kim's, in utterly surprising ways. Not for the better.The last two thirds of Terms of Service are nonstop fear and dread, too suspenseful and unexpected to spoil by description, except to hint that so-called Artificial Intelligence turns out to be much more than it seems. As his website reveals, Craig W. Stanfill's skillfully written novel is the work of a professional expert in AI, who knows better than most of us what can go terribly wrong. I'm hoping to survive until his forthcoming Book 2. This is an engaging read , set in a dystopian world, yet with a hopeful view. The author flings us immediately into the world ,avoiding unnecessary explanations, and leaving it to the reader to work out what is going on. The main character is an appealing ‘youth’ , exploring adulthood and self, and finding that the world is bigger , and darker than she had ever imagined. Characters are well developed - including the house bot and the refrigerator. Readers looking for a wild ride in an interesting world will not be disappointed.
